PHP is a scripting language created in 1994 as a hypertext preprocessor. PHP code is combined with other elements such as CSS, Javascript, and HTML by the server itself, which then serves up webpages comprised of all those elements as an integrated whole. PHP is commonly used as the backbone for open source CMS (Content Management System) frameworks such as WordPress, Drupal, and countless others.
